Makeup Styling For The Protein Bakery Press Shoot

Hi everyone!

I just sat down with a big mug of tea to update my blog with what I’m up to. I sometimes struggle to sit back and find the time to reflect on my going’s-on and share them but it’s important, especially as I’d love to look back in the future and see how far I’ve progressed.

Today I worked on an exciting project with The Protein Bakery which was organised by Ledigo PR. We had a great team, with @hairbysophie _m on the hair, @jadekaty and @southweather84 on photography and myself creating the makeup look. Then model for the day was the director of The Protein Bakery, Laura Jackson. She thought up the concept in her own kitchen and is now set to sell her products in January 2018, launching in supermarkets and major online companies.

A little bit about the company…

So, how many of you get cravings on a regular basis for cakes, cookies, donuts etc? Especially when you’re on a diet! The Protein Bakery has created a new concept of protein fortified goodies to curb cravings for real (a bog standard protein bar just doesn’t cut it) whilst remaining clean and adding to your daily protein intake. I have sampled the range and I have to say they genuinely taste like your normal baked goods – the Salted Caramel Cookie is unreal! They don’t have that protein after taste that you get with so many protein products.

What I really love about the range is that it appeals to so many people. So many people can feel intimidated by the fitness and protein industry and feel that maybe the usual protein bars and shakes etc we see in stores are aimed at uber-toned, fitness addicts. That’s where The Protein Bakery is different and appeals to EVERYONE whether you’re sculpting your six pack or simply trying to make healthier choices.

Back to the makeup…

We wanted a ‘Nigella’ feel to the look so we kept it all matte and neutrals. I used YSL foundation and brown and nude eyeshadows from Kiko Milano. The brows were filled with light strokes of MAC Spike and brushed with a clear brow gel for a soft, ‘barely done’ look. I didn’t use any contouring or highlighting for this look as I really wanted it to remain fresh and simple, so I simply defined the cheek bones and lifted the skin tone using Dior blusher. The look was finished with some light strip-lashes, Charlotte Tilbury lipstick in Penelope Pink and set with Sport FX setting spray. The final look was girly and soft and perfect for the day time but with that extra glam!

Keep an eye out on The Protein Bakery’s Instagram to be the first to get your hands on the products and the chance to win some competitions they have coming up!

Cocoa+ Protein Chocolate

I’m pretty obsessed with adding as much protein to all meals/snacks as possible, but admittedly I do get a little sick of meat, eggs, fish etc. Sometimes you just need that little sweet fix without all the guilt and WITH all the protein.

You might want to sit down for this because you may not beleive what I’m about to tell you….. Protein chocolate IS a thing. A real thing.

The amazing people at were so kind as to send me some goodies to try. I am officially in love. When you hear ‘proteion’ attached to any of your favourite foods, you automatically assume it’s going to be dry or have a weird after taste or something. NOT the case here.

Cocoa+ tastes exactly the same as a rich, high quality chocolate. You’d never know it contained over 27g of protein per 100g. This is whey protein isolate that’s infused into the chocolate – pure luxury without the guilt. I’ve been having a square or two each evening and it’s just enough to feel like you’ve had a treat. It’s also amazing for cooking – I whipped up these little banana-coconut-Choc clean icecream using a couple of smashed up squares and also these clean peanut butter cups! (I will post recipes if anyone is interested!) Basically, it’s an all round winner and you’re mad if you don’t stock your cupboards up with it. Everyone needs a treat sometimes and it’s better to reach for the high protein alternative to your usual sugary, non-nutritional fav’s.

You can order yours here (the ordinary Choc one is my fav but the crunch ones are all unreal) at Cocoa Plus

Reflex Protein Coffee

Sometimes it’s hard to find the energy to squeeze in a workout after a long day working, when you feel like you’d rather be curling up with a blanket and a hot drink. I know I’m guilty of this!

The kind people at Reflex Nutrition sent me over a little stash of their AMAZING protein coffee. This little can of magic gives you an amazing caffeine boost to aid your workout, alongside having a huge 25g protein per can! Every fitness persons dream.

Last week, I ended up having 2 personal training sessions with two different trainers. I had my usual session with my trainer Ash at 11am, then worked for a few hours, then went with my mum to see her trainer and experience what her workouts are like. I kind of regretted this when every muscle in my body was BURNING.

But did I stop there? Nope. I went straight from session number 2 to do an hour and a quarter of yoga! Yoga is my ultimate fav at the moment and there was no way I was going to miss my weekly wind-down!

So, my competitiveness made the day even harder because I had to beat my mum at everything and I had to master every yoga pose. But back to the coffee….. It was absolutely top notch to keep me fuelled throughout the gruelling day and to top up my protein levels. It’s definitely going to become a staple in my cupboard!

You can purchase your own protein coffee from the Reflex site – you won’t regret it!

Clean/vegetarian one-pan breakfast hash.

Good morning everyone!

Yesterday, I returned home from a lovely 4 nights away, watching the United Kingdom Galaxy Pageant. The late nights and early starts have knocked me out, but it was so worth it. A huge congratulations to all of the lovely new winners!

So now I’m home, it’s back to normality and clean eating/workouts. I’m trying to base my diet on fruit and vegetables and that all important protein – I always feel best when I keep my diet quite natural, and I enjoy cooking everything from scratch.

This morning, I thought I’d try something new and put together a one-pan hash, based on a lunch/dinner recipe I use by The Body Coach. I came up with a breakfast friendly version and it was ah-maz-ing.

Continue reading to find out the recipe…

What you’ll need:

  • One M/L frying pan
  • One tsp coconut oil (or alternative)
  • 4/5 washed/sliced mushrooms
  • 1 handful washed spinach
  • One potato cubed and microwaved
  • 3/4 slices of mozzarella roughly cubed
  • 2 free-range eggs
  • Salt, pepper, paprika to season

  • After microwaving your potato until soft, melt the coconut oil in the pan and add the potato, sautéing until golden brown. (Season with salt and paprika)
  • Add the sliced mushrooms and gently sauté.
  • Add a handful of spinach and sauté for just a few seconds
  • Create a hole in the middle of the pan and crack in the two eggs
  • Sprinkle the mozerella around the edges
  • Place under a hot grill until eggs are cooked

And Voila… A healthy, filling breakfast full of goodness.

Protein Shakes |Fitness Goals|Exclusive Discount

How is everyone getting on in their New Year fitness goals?

I find that when I let myself relax on the fitness and clean-eating over Christmas etc, I really struggle for the first few days of trying to get back into it. That’s why I was so thankful to receive a lovely package from my friends at Nudey Tea.

They’ve started a new range of supps to promote good health as well as fitness and aesthetic goals. I received their new multivitamins and protein shakes and a handy little protein shaker bottle.

  Nudey Shake in Skinny Coconut.

Women often worry about protein shakes making them bulky or fat – that’s REALLY not the case and if you’re trying to build lean muscle, a protein shake after a workout is a great addition to your diet. You absolutely can’t get fat from protein – your body uses what it needs and simply gets rid of what it doesn’t. Don’t think of it as 150 extra calories because 150cals of chocolate in comparison will have a majorly different effect on your body. It’s all about nutrition.

Nudey Shakes contain a massive 31g of protein per serving and only 1g of fat and 3.9g carbs. This makes it super lean. Not to mention, it also contains CLA and green tea which are great fat burners.

Nudey recommend one scoop after a workout or as a snack, or alternatively 2 scoops as a meal replacement. I don’t personally recommend skipping meals in favour of shakes so prefer to take mine after a workout. However, if your trainer or doctor recommend this to you, then go for it!

  Post workout shake.
The shakes come in two amazing flavours – Coconut and strawberry (with more flavours coming soon!) and they both taste amazing. I’ve mentioned their detox tea’s many times – they work perfectly together for a massive kickstart on your new bod.

My followers can now get an exclusive 20% discount on their ENTIRE order! Simply add your items to your cart and enter the code HELEN at checkout. There, your 20% discount will be applied to your goodies. Shop Here.

OGX hair products.

My hair has suffered so much over the years from over-processing on photoshoots, damage from scuba diving, years of bleaching….

I’ve recently had my roots slightly darker, fading down into the blonde really really subtly so that I can grow my roots down and avoid the damage of bleaching! Now my mission is to treat my hair the best I can to make it grow luscious and thick again. This includes avoiding brushing as much as possible and washing only every 2-3 days so my hair can rest and create natural oils! I found this picture which is my ultimate hair goals at the moment!

A while ago, my mum bought back some shampoo and conditioner that had been recommended to her. After looking at it, I realised it was the same brand as the coconut milk oil I had been using for years! I just remember being out shopping once and my hair felt dry so I randomly bought some pretty cheap oil (partly because I love coconut!) to stick on whilst I was out. And I actually fell in love. I do swear by it now and use it after every wash and between washes on dry hair if I need it, despite that not being on the instructions.

OGX coconut milk anti-breakage serum  contains coconut milk (obvs) and we all know that coconut is hailed as a massive beauty saviour. Also, egg white proteins – if they’re good enough for my diet, they’re good enough for my hair.

Ive now tried three of the different shampoos/conditioners they have on offer and my FAV are the  anti-breakage Keratin Oil ones. The keratin proteins and Argan oil leave my hair feeling luscious – not to mention the amazzzzze smell.

I do like the Argan Oil and Brazilian Keratin Smooth versions also but the pink is my ultimate.

There’s a whole massive range and you can find them in your local supermarkets, Boots or Superdrug and I’m sure many other retailers. All products are around £6-£7.

What hair products do you love? Swear by? Can’t live without? Let me know in the comments or tweet/Instagram me @heliemac1

Goodbye, July. My July Top Picks.

Perhaps this post is a couple of days late, but I thought I’d do a little post detailing some of the things I’ve loved this July. As I’ve celebrated my 21st birthday, I’ve had lots of nice treats to try out! Here’s my top picks.

1) Australasia – Spinningfields.

On my 21st, after my graduation ceremony (busy day!) we headed to Australasia in Spinningfields, Manchester. I’ve been before to this Asian Fusion restaurant and it never fails to impress me with the food, drinks and decor. It feels super exclusive heading downstairs and the selection of sushi, delicious dishes and cocktails are exceptional. Make sure you try the chocolate dome!

2) All things Elemis.

I’ve been loving the Papaya Enzyme Peel, Exotic Moisture Mask and Skin Bliss Capsules that I picked up on my spa weekend. I suffer from dry skin so these are all really hydrating and are keeping my skin glowing.

3) Nutribullet.

I’ve mentioned previously that I’ve used this every single day since I got it! I’ve been enjoying making new recipes up with different fruits and leafy greens – I would totally recommend this for any health-lovers like me!

4) WheyHey Protein Ice Cream.

On the rare sunny days in England, it’s nice to have grab a frozen treat and WheyHey offer an amaaaaazing guilt free one. One 150ml tub contains 20g protein and tastes delicious! I think it has an almost sticky/chewy consistency and comes in a range of flavours. You can pick some up in Holland and Barrat or online Here.

5) Fudge Make-A-Mends Shampoo and Conditioner.

I picked these up from the wholesalers and I’m loving how silky they’re keeping my hair. I always like to spend a little more on good hair products, with having bleach on my locks. You can snap some up online Here.

6) All things Missguided.

The affordable fashion site has so much to offer right now that I can’t choose what to buy, I want it all! I picked up a few items already and I know for sure I’ll be making an order this August. Take a look for yourself Here.

7) Muji Aroma Diffuser.

This is one of the many gorgeous gifts I received from my lovely boyfriend, after he’s noticed me lusting after them in selfridges for ages. I adore things like this and always have scented candles and oil burners on so this is perfect for me as it vapour uses water and essential oils and produces a scented must that fills the house. My favourite oil so far is the Mandarin one. You can purchase online Here or visit selfridges.

These are just a few of the things I’ve loved this month and I’ll be sure to post next months up on time!

Breakfast Smoothie Recipe

Good morning!

I’ve recently celebrated my 21st birthday and one of the most useful gifts I received (from my sisters) is a NutriBullet! I’ve been dying for one of these for ages and I’ve actually used it every single day since I’ve had it! I’m preparing hard for Miss Scuba UK now so a smoothie makes a great breakfast to help get my body in the best shape, and also the vitamin rich ingredients can encourage glowing skin and healthy hair and nails.

I like to start my day with a good wholesome breakfast to keep me going through busy days so this smoothie recipe is perfect for keeping me full and giving me energy, whilst tasting amazing!

  • 1 whole medium banana
  • 1 generous handful of frozen berries
  • 1 sachet of porridge oats (27g)
  • Unsweetened almond milk

I just threw the ingredients into the cup and blended well for about 30-40 seconds. The amount of almond milk you use is dependent on the consistency you like. I like mine thick so I didn’t go all the way up to the Max Line.

I have put together a rough guideline for the nutritional values:

  • Calories – 250
  • Protein – 5.1g
  • Total fat – 4.7g
  • Saturated fat – 0.6g
  • Carbohydrates – 43g
  • Fibre – 6g

Enjoy…. 🙂

Muscle Food: Clean eating made affordable!

I simply had to share this with everyone. I came across an amazing deal on the website Muscle Food !!

The ‘try us selection’ is exceptional value for money. It contains a huge range of meats from chicken breasts to steaks, bacon to chicken sausages! As well as these meats and more, such as burgers, drumsticks and turkey, you receive sweet potatoes, kale, peppers, protein bars/crisps…. You won’t believe the price…. £19!!!!

It sounds to good to be true, but this is a website with fantastic reviews and has been recommended to me by friends that use it for their clean-eating needs. You have to have a minimum spend of £25 + the £4 or £5 postage so it does work out at around £30 but in addition to the Try Us Selection I ordered peanut butter, BBQ soy beans, peanut puffs and a protein flapjack! There’s a huge range of goodies that can be ordered on here.

If this isn’t all good enough value for money – you can also use the code HM93809 at the checkout to get an
extra four chicken breasts or two steaks!

I am SO excited for my order to arrive tomorrow! I hope this was of interest to some of you – I must add that the order must be made by Sunday 11/01/15 to qualify for the £19 deal, however the code will work for any orders! Happy shopping x
