My Makeup Journey

Hey guys!

As I mentioned in my last post, I’m starting training as a pro MUA – with today being my first proper lesson. I’ve decided not to take the route of a full time course, for a few different reasons.

Firstly, I already have a lot of makeup skills and I don’t feel like I need an expensive/intensive 10-20 week course. I’m already trained in AirBase makeup and obviously have my makeup done on shoots all of the time so I’m not starting at scratch. Secondly, I would rather learn tips and techniques from a range of artists because I love how everyone has different ways of doing things. Thirdly, I learn better in this environment and can have attention focussed on me when on a 1-to-1 basis.

Today I worked with Patrick Baston at Pout Patrol in Bury. Patrick’s work is UNREAL – so flawless and he has such a creative mind, demonstrates on his Instagram. I learned so much from Patrick today and now have a crazy long shopping list of all of the amazing products he recommended!

I took my sister to model for me and we created a look using some warm tones from various palettes and then mixed it up with the most amazing mermaidy glitter from Topshop (of all places!). The skin was quite dewy with a very heavy coverage and some beautiful contouring and highlighting. We used Armani Luminous silk on the skin, followed by Nars Creamy Concealer. The bronzer of choice was from the Kat Von D palette and we used two highlighters – an amazing gold from the MAC Christmas collection and a dab of a Topshop one just to finish it off (this was also used on the brow bone).

The brows were created using Anastasia Beverley Hills Dip Brow Pomade with a fine brush to create more of a fluffy brow look. MAC feline liner and gel liner was applied into the water line and blended into the lash line using the darker transition shade, and finally blended further out using the lightest transition shade. The look was completed with a nude glossy lip using various products from Rimmel and MAC.

From today’s lesson, I learned that I can get away with taking the product further up and out on the eye. I’m quite shy with my lines and tend to keep them tight in around the crease when it really does look amazing to drag it up practically to the brow in some areas of the eye. This really helps disguise any hooding of the eye. Also, I picked up some techniques of applying and blending using different brush strokes and angles.

My reasoning for logging my progress on my blog is so that I can not only show you guys how I’m coming along, but so I can look back and a) remember the tips I’ve learned b) see how my style changes and progresses as I continue my makeup journey.

The completed look is below with a before and after. No editing or filters, just great light and flawless skin!

Jane Iredale Glow Time Full-Coverage BB Cream Review.

I’ve recently been sent the Jane Iredale BB Cream to test and review, and have used it for the past few weeks to reveal the most honest and clear review of how I found the product. (All opinions are my own, this is an honest review of the product).

I apply the BB cream first with my MAC foundation brush, then I continue to blend it with the Real Techniques beauty blender. My first thought when I started to apply was HOW AMAZING the coverage is for a BB cream. I’d compare this with MAC studio fix for coverage. The BB creams I usually use have quite a light coverage and aren’t really suitable for me on a daily basis. This however really does have a truly heavy coverage whilst still feeling light on the skin.

At first, I wasn’t sure the shade was right for me (BB6) as it seemed quite yellow but as it blended in, I realised it was ideal for me and totally brightened up my complexion. I always go for yellow tones on my skin rather than pinks/beige.

I have reasonably dry skin so a lot of foundations are a no-no for me because they can create dry lines and visible pores. That’s why I’m so happy to have found a hydrating mineral BB cream that allows me to wear a full-coverage look without the negative side effects!

To put this BB cream to the test, I’ve worn it for a few different daily activities to see how it fairs.

1: A Day At Work – as you may know, I’m a full-time model so when I’m working I don’t tend to wear my own makeup. However, I do occasionally cover at my parents business which is a children’s day-nursery. I wore this BB cream for the full day to see how it stayed on for a 9-6 shift. The coverage stayed neat, however it had gotten a little patchy on my nose by lunch time and my T-Zone was a little oily. I think this is because it’s so hydrating so I don’t really mind because it’s sort of one or the other for me. I’d rather a quick dab with my beauty blender than the dryness.

2: A Work-Out – yep, I’m one of those girls who likes a bit of natural makeup on in the gym. I’m not talking eyeliner and contour etc, just a dab of BB Cream and a slick of mascara. And nope, it doesn’t make me work any less harder and nope it (generally) doesn’t end up a patchy mess on my face (have you never heard of setting spray?). So, I’ve been wearing the BB cream for the gym and even after a sweaty, intense workout with my trainer, my face stays pretty much perfect still. 10/10 for a workout foundation because it’s mineral based and won’t clog your pores like a normal foundation!

3: In The Pool and Sauna – okay this one was more for the blog post, but I did keep it on for a relax in the pool and sauna post-workout. Obviously my face gets wet in this process so it was interesting to come out of the pool and see that although the coverage had massively decreased, it was all even and my face wasn’t patchy at all!

4: On Holiday – I never use regular Suncream on my face on holiday because it just clogs it up so much. Plus I avoid sun on my face so it always ends up much more pale than my body so I like a light coverage with an SPF. I used this BB cream in Marbella (where everyone is glam so makeup is a must during the day!) and with its SPF 25, it did the job perfectly.

So, all in all it has been a fantastic product, one that I’ve recommended to all of my friends who’ve gone out and bought it and love it as much as I do! It’s definitely my go-to product now and it’s a total staple in my makeup bag. I was also sent their blusher and lip balm which I use all the time also. The 3 together just create the most lovely, soft makeup look with the delicate pinks and gorgeous textures.

Let me know how you get on! Hels X

Bargain Buys: Get The Best For Your Money.

Like many girls, there’s an endless list of things I want (need). Literally, it’s never ending because as soon as I get my hands on something, I see the next thing for my wish list. I know most girls are the same so I’ve compiled a few bargains I’ve seen recently so you can reep the benefits too. I’ll continue with these posts if you guys like them so make sure you let me know via the comments/insta/twitter.

Glamour Magazine

You can get some AMAZING free gifts in magazines every so often and I find Glamour does the best! Last month it was a tube of a new St Tropez tan and this month there’s a range of Model Co makeup! They’ve worked with Model Co previously and I remember getting a lip liner I LOVED but then begrudged paying £16 for another when it ran out as I knew how cheap I had it previously. So you can imagine my excitement when I saw it in this months issue for only ONE POUND. Obviously I bought two. Also there’s an eyeliner, mascara and lipgloss available worth a combined £55. I’m now on the hunt to find the gloss! Always check out the magazine freebies when you’re at the supermarket or newsagents. Primark

I’m sure you already know the bargain store that is Primark. But did you know they’ve bought out a small range of Perspex beauty organisers? You know the ones that are everywhereeeee on Instagram and allow you to show off all your designer makeup? I needed a new one for my ever expanding MAC lipstick collection and was so happy to see this bargain one for £2 when id usually expect to pay between £15-£60 (depending on size).

The top left holder is the Primark one, that’s holding the foundations, lip liners and 6 lipsticks.

Also from Primark, these cute little bikinis that cost me something ridiculous like £2 or £3 and were perfect for lazy days on the beach when you don’t need to dress up too much! How can you argue for that price?

Zara Sale

I wasn’t even aware of this until I went into my agency and all of the bookers had huge boxes delivered! Head to the Zara website and there’s TONES of stuff in the sale. Grab yourself a bargain!

Spotify Premium

I’m new to Spotify so recently took advantage of their free week trial of Premium. I was pleasantly surprised by their offer of another 3 months for just 0.99p – how could I refuse that? This offer is on until June 30th so if you’re new to Spotify also, take advantage of this amazing offer! Have you spotted any more bargains, freebies or money saving tips? Share them with me in the comments or via Twitter/Instagram!

Ann Summers: Willa Bra

Ann Summers ‘Willa’, MAC Lipstick in ‘Chilli’ (scroll for more images)

I’m a sucker for buying cute underwear. I have drawers and drawers full of every variety and colour.
One of my favourite stores at the moment is Ann Summers. I always used to think it was full of OTT numbers that don’t suit my style at all, but I’ve realised in the last few months that they actually have some really sweet designs that are girly and pretty. One of these is the Willa that I picked up in Red this week (it also comes in black). I really wish they did a white or cream version of this because I think it would be gorgeous!

Sometimes, thick winter jumpers and coats can leave you feeling a little frumpy so I love wearing delicate bra’s underneath my huge chunky knitted jumpers. Even though it’s only you that knows it’s there, I kinda like that.

One of the things about the Willa bra is that it’s almost a fashion piece rather than a bra, similar to the Ayra bra I picked up from A.S not long ago. I wore the Ayra with a black top so the lace neck-tie was visible and got so many compliments (you can find the images on my Instagram @heliemac1). I feel you could style the Willa as part of an outfit also, it would be amazing on holiday with a good tan.

   Lace detail.
Styled with a white wrap-around skirt.
Perfect teamed with a chunky knit and a matching red lip.

November moodboard.

I’m finally starting to get into the Autumn/winter time of year, even though I’m a complete summer girl.

Here’s a few of my top picks for the month.

Mullberry and chunky knits, a match made in heaven.
It’s time to get the blankets out! I’m in love with chunky knitted blankets and throws.
‘Basically nude’ bras to keep secretly feminine under all of the baggy clothes and coats.   Cute silky PJs, all year round.
Particularly Victoria’s Secret ones.   Major hair envy.
Barely-there makeup with a dewy glow and a dab of glowy highlighter.

Illamasqua cream pigment for contouring.
Time to top up my MAC lipstick collection with a few warm autumn tones. The reds and purples are unreal.

Guilt free winter warmer – Matcha Green Tea Lattes.

Mocha thigh high boots are everywhere at the moment.

The 2015 Victoria’s Secret show IS TONIGHT. I’ve decided I’m prepping my body for the 2016 selections. A girl can dream….? Every female models ultimate goal.

What are you loving this season?

Estée Lauder New Dimension review

Estée Lauder are always updating their current products and introducing new ranges to keep our skin looking and feeling smooth. It’s been a long time favourite brand of mine for skincare. The newest range is ‘New Dimension’ which involves a serum, contour kit and eye contour kit and expert liquid tape. The products are designed to contour the face and give a more sculpted, firm look.

I always take care of my skin (mainly Estée Lauder products) so wasn’t exactly banging on selfridges door trying to grab this product, but when I was walking through, I spoke with my regular EL consultant and she handed me a sample of the new serum (she knows I love to try new products and tend to purchase them!). She told me that the product has exfoliating properties and exposed the fresh layers of skin, therefore not to use for a week before holiday sun exposure. I’m heading out to Egypt in a week for more diving, so I’ve only been able to use the product for a couple of days but already I LOVE IT. I can’t wait to start using it again!

The website states that the serum transforms the skin, leaving it plumped, smooth and more refined – with a good majority of those who tested agreeing. It can be used day and night, and I’ve used it for 2 days and 2 nights. Already, my skin is feeling silky and fresh and looks radiant even without makeup. I would go as far as to say it’s a ‘must-have’ product. I currently use the Enlighten and Night Repair serums but after sampling this, I will be swapping over!

At £62 for 30ml or £88 for 50ml – it’s pricey. But if your skin is a priority then go for it. I’d say it’s great for any skin type whether you’re dry or oily. For dry skin, it will hydrate and remove dead skin cells. For oily skin, it will leave it feeling refreshed and smooth. Obviously speak with your local EL consultant whether it’s right for you, but I do love it!

I’m yet to try the rest of the range but I have a particular interest in the expert liquid tape. It’s used before any other skincare products, on clean skin and does pretty much the same as the serum with tightening and encouraging collegen in the skin to promote a firm, contoured look. Go into your local counter and they’re always more than happy to try the products out on you and give you samples so you can be sure you love your products before you splash out!

Happy shopping X

MAC lips.

Good morning lovelies! I’m shopping this weekend so I’ve been browsing blogs and online for what treats I should buy. I’m a massive lipstick fan and always more than happy to add to my collection that’s almost exclusively MAC. They’ve always been my favourite – relatively inexpensive, amazing range of colours, good range of textures (matte/glossy etc). I always tend to go for really similar ones. I have so many light pinky shades and a whole load of nudes and only one bold red.

On a recent Selfridges trip, I was browsing the current MAC is Beauty collection and fell in love with pretty much the whole lipstick collection. I swatched a few on my hand and noticed they are much more glossy than the regular MAC lipsticks, but still have a really full colour. This is so ideal for me because I can sometimes get quite dry lips from some of my lipsticks but I love a really full coverage of colour. Long story short – I couldn’t choose which I liked best so I didn’t get any! But I will definitely be purchasing this weekend since I’ve narrowed it down to two now!

You can see why I want them all! Notice Me perhaps isn’t as wearable for me as the others but it’s still undeniably pretty. I’ve narrowed my choices down to Real Redhead and Highlights because my all time fav MAC lipstick is Freckle Tone and I feel like these mixed would be quite similar to this. Honestly though, the more I look at this, the more I want French Twist and Pure Vanity too…. Did it mention it’s my birthday coming up…..?
I stumbled across another thing that excited me recently…. Yep – more lipsticks!

This new MAC collection is rumoured to launch July 9th and I think it’s just genius. I store my lipsticks in a clear Perspex lipstick organiser and since they all look exactly the same, I have the effort of looking at the bottom of each one to find which I want. With these little babies, the outside is exactly the same as the outside so you can just grab the one you want and head out! They are matte which doesn’t sit well on a lot of people’s lips (mine included) but I’m hoping a bit of Vaseline can sort this out because I loveeeee all of them.
Let me know your favourite lipsticks and any other brands you can recommend! Do you have any of these lipsticks?

Soleil Tan De Chanel – Bronzing Makeup Base REVIEW.

The weather is (kind of) starting to get a little better in the UK now we’re well into May, so I think it’s nice to add some warmth into makeup looks to give a bronzed effect.

In my last post, I mentioned how I had my makeup done at Chanel for my grad ball. The cost of the makeover is redeemable on purchases so I kept a close eye on what the MUA used, so I could decide which item I fancied taking home.

I had heard of Soleil Tan De Chanel before and it did intruige me as its a creamy texture, so I was glad when she took it out to use on me. I suffer from quite dry skin if I’m not careful so I have to keep my skin constantly hydrated. Also I love a dewy look rather than matte so powders don’t work too well on my skin. This is a creamy (almost mousse) texture which is quite luxurious on the skin.

Although this product is cream, it’s applied with a brush. I used Real Techniques contour brush to apply and finished with Real Techniques buffing brush. There’s so many ways you can use this product which makes it so versatile. Firstly, you can add a thin layer to the entire face before foundation for a subtle glow, you can mix with your foundation to go up a shade, use as a contour or bronzer and finally, as a full body tan on top of body lotion.

For this look, I used a light layer before my foundation and finished with gentle contouring on my cheek bones, forehead and nose. I just used it really naturally to begin with but you can build this product up for a more dramatic look.

It feels so soft and dewy on the skin and creates a flawless finish. As I said, it’s so versatile so it’s definitely worth the £32 in my opinion but I’ve heard there’s a dupe by Bourjois so it might be a good option to try that first and see how you get on with a cream before splurging on Chanel.

I should add that I’ve had Soleil Tan De Chanel in the powder form previously and loved it and it lasted for so long! I have high expectations of how long this will last as it’s used so minimally and is a good sized pot.

You can purchase at any Chanel counter or online Here

Other products I used:

Armani Luminous Silk Foundation.

MAC lip liner in Spice.

Dior Addict Gloss in Dolly Pink.

Dreamweave Lash Magnet Mascara.

Natural brows.
